What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is the medical term for a traditional nose job. Dr. Tornambe performs this type of surgery to improve the functionality of your nose and help you breathe better. He can also recommend this surgery if you’re bothered by the appearance of your nose due to its size or shape.

What can I expect during a rhinoplasty procedure?

Dr. Tornambe uses two different techniques to alter the shape or functionality of your nose. In the open approach, he can effectively sculpt your nose with minimal scarring to the outside tip of your nose.

In the closed approach, Dr. Tornambe makes all incisions inside the nose so scarring is not visible. This procedure may produce more swelling than the open technique, but is more effective in fixing complicated issues, such as a broken nose.

If you’re having problems breathing because of a deviated septum, Dr. Tornambe repairs the wall between your nostrils to allow better air flow. He can also remove polyps on the septum that interfere with your breathing.

Do I have to stay in the hospital after surgery?

Dr. Tornambe can perform rhinoplasty as an outpatient procedure in a state-of-the-art surgical suite at his Upper East Side office. Whether you choose general anesthesia to put you into a deep sleep or a light sedative with local anesthetics, a board-certified anesthesiologist administers the medications and monitors you throughout your surgery.

Following the procedure, you recover under the care of a registered nurse. You need a friend to drive you home, and it’s preferable you have someone to care for you for the first night.

How long does it take to recover from rhinoplasty?

Your nose and surrounding areas will swell due to the abundant blood supply in your face, but good blood flow also speeds up your healing process and limits scarring. Swelling should begin to subside within 10 days, and you can use ice packs to reduce swelling as much as possible.

You should take time off work for at least seven days post-surgery, and Dr. Tornambe may limit your activities for several days to help you heal.

You can expect to see the noticeable results of your surgery within four weeks, and it can take six months to a year to enjoy optimum results.
